Atlanta, Georgia ![]() If you travel anywhere on the east coast chances are that you’ll go via, through or around ATLANTA on a busy interstate on your way to somewhere else, or to and from the airport on your way to a business convention and never get to experience the many attractions this exciting southern city has to offer. Instead of trying to get a glimpse of the city skyline at the same time as battling the traffic, look for an exit sign, head downtown and experience a “hands-on” taste of Atlanta . Take the Metro Tour Shuttle, put on your most comfortable shoes and explore the city’s wonderful architecture and exciting past by joining a leisurely tour of the State Capital, government buildings, inner city churches with pre-civil war roots and Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum where history comes alive as you step back to July 22nd, 1864 and become part of the battle. Tour the West End or Underground Atlanta to experience unique shopping, dining and entertainment and, a “must-see visit” for kids of all ages, Wren’s Nest in SW Atlanta - home of author Joel Chandler Harris who brought us those delightful tales of Brer Rabbit and his friends. Guided tours are offered Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday from 10:30am/1:30pm, call 404-7853-7735 or email the historic site at wrensnest@mindspring.com for more information. Don’t miss the Fox Theatre - one of the few remaining movie palaces of the 1920s, impeccably intact and listed on the National Register of Historic Places; or relive the phenonomen of Gone with the Wind, best selling novel of all time at the Margaret Mitchell House & Museum located at the corner of Peachtree and 10th Street - see the Tara movie set, costumes and memorabilia from the world’s largest collection. Can you imagine a museum where there’s no such thing as “Don’t Touch?” Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta on Centennial Olympic Park Drive is a place where children and grown-ups are transported into a different world, where the line between learning and fun is invisible. And you’re not imagining things if you see a giant ship breaking through a wave in landlocked downtown Atlanta - its the facade of the new Georgia Aquarium, situated on 9-1/2 acres adjacent to Centennial Park, within walking distance of downtown hotels and the Georgia World Congress Center, the world’s largest aquarium with 8 million gallons of fresh and marine water and more than one hundred thousand animals from around the globe. You’re sure to discover things you’ve never seen before! The Georgia Aquarium is creating “waves” of excitement as the most unique place for weddings, receptions, banquets and dinners - to reserve your space or purchase advance tickets visit www.georgiaaquarium.org or call 404 581 4444. A “must see” for sport fans has to be the Georgia Dome, the largest cable-supported domed stadium in the world. Located downtown, the Dome is the home venue for the Atlanta Falcons and host of the gymnastics and basketball events for the 1996 Olympic Games. In 2006, 10th Anniversary of Atlanta’s Olympic Games, the Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships take place in the Dome, for ticket information call 404-249-6400. For baseball fans there’s the Atlanta Braves Museum and Hall of Fame - where the legends live! Tour Turner Field and visit the press box, broadcast booth, clubhouse/locker room and dugout. Call the museum at 404 614 2311 for more information. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE........... Spend a few days in and around Atlanta and take a short trip to Callaway Gardens to take in the splendor of this 14,000-acre garden attraction or visit Stone Mountain Park featuring the world’s largest mass of stone granite. You can take a sky lift to the top of the 825 foot high Stone Mountain, take a ride on a steam driven locomotive, riverboat cruise, visit an authentic antebellum plantation and end your day with a laser show on the side of the mountain. If you’re brave enough you could ride The Georgia Scorcher the newest roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia and one of the southeast’s tallest and fastest standup roller coasters at 107 feet high and speeds up to 54 mph.
