Brunswick, named for Braunsweig, Germany, the ancestral home of King George II is easily accessible from I-95 exit 36B or from Highway 17. Old Town Brunswick is the largest small town urban National Register Historic District in Georgia. The streets and squares are lined with homes noted for their turn-of-the-century architecture and eclectic mix of styles. The roads are laid out in a grid pattern based on General James Oglethorpe's design. Streets are named in honor of English royalty and geography. Examples include "Prince," "Halifax," "Gloucester," "Norwich," and "Hanover."
The Mahoney-McGarvey House, at 1709 Reynolds Street, is one of the finest examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture in Georgia. Opposite this house is the Old Courthouse, erected in 1907, it is now surrounded by moss-hung live-oak and trees of foreign origin including tung and Chinese pistachio.

Brunswick is pursuing downtown revitalization through a comprehensive approach to economic redevelopment and historic preservation. Historic Downtown Brunswick is centered at the intersection of Newcastle and Gloucester Streets, the traditional commercial corridors of the city.
